Ohio Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown is currently working on legislation that he says will help prevent fentanyl from entering the country.

That piece of legislation is the fentanyl sanctions act. The bipartisan act, if it passes, would provide U.S. officials with the new sanctions tools to track traffickers from countries like China and Mexico to prevent them from importing fentanyl into the United States.

Senator Brown says working with law enforcement, providing border agents with screening devices, having better prevention education and treatment options are some of the best ways to ensure those drugs stay out of the country.

If this act is passed senator brown believes Ohio cities will be in better shape to stop the problem and help those who are addicted to this dangerous drug.

“Lima, and no other community in Ohio, really around the country: Wapak, or Lima, or Ottawa, or Cleveland were well enough prepared to scale up treatment facilities for people that are addicted so a lot of this is treatment, a lot of it is prevention education, a lot of it is law enforcement and some of it is foreign policy in keeping this out of the country,” said Brown.

The Fentanyl Sanctions Act was also backed by six other senators from across the country.
