28 Jun Alleged gang members in custody following drug bust in Baltimore
Baltimore police and the city state’s attorney’s office said investigators seized cocaine, fentanyl and other drugs, while 14 alleged members of a notorious and violent gang are now under arrest.Police said the investigation started in February, and the 14 in custody are members of the J-30 Payback Crips. The charges against them range from participation in a gang, conspiracy to distribute narcotics and weapons violations.Police said raids in the Coldstream-Homestead and Upper Montebello communities were the result of a four-month investigation. They hope this makes a large dent in homicides and other violence, along with the drug trade in northeast Baltimore. Seized in the raids: $43,000 in cash, cocaine, heroin, fentanyl and marijuana, three guns and ammunition. Police and State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby said the investigation was a collaborative effort between police and her office, funded by a grant from Gov. Larry Hogan’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention. That grant is aimed at aggressively getting violent offenders and drug traffickers off the streets. “The ability to stop and intercept drug activity and target, especially those that are distributing fentanyl, is integral to the component of tackling violence in the city,” Mosby said.Police said they will continue monitoring the areas where the arrests were made, trying to keep others from trying to fill the void by setting up similar criminal enterprises.”I think the message from this collective body is clear. You’re looking at (the) entire weight of local and state government, and we have the federal government with us as well. If you decide that violent crime is going to be the life you choose, we will see to it that prison will be the price you pay,” police Commissioner Michael Harrison said. Police said that in addition to the 14 arrests, they have outstanding warrants for four other suspects.
