Jury finds Oswego man guilty of having $1.2 million worth of fentanyl, heroin, crack cocaine

OSWEGO, N.Y. — An Oswego County jury found a 43-year-old man guilty of possessing more than $1.2 million worth of drugs — including a large stash of fentanyl.

Jeremy Acosta, of Oswego, was found guilty Wednesday of first-degree and second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, as well as four counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. Acosta possessed substantial amounts of fentanyl, heroin, cocaine,and suboxone with the intent to sell those substances, prosecutors said.

Acosta was arrested in April 2018 by the Oswego County Drug Task Force and charged with possessing over 1,600 grams of drugs, Investigator Charles Tonkin, coordinator of the task force, said last year. Acosta was arrested after officers executed a search warrant at his city of Oswego apartment.

Here’s what officers found, according to Tonkin:

• 1,230 grams (2.7 pounds) of fentanyl worth $1,000,000
• 324.3 grams (11.4 ounces) of heroin worth $216,200
• 62.1 grams (2.2 ounces) of crack cocaine worth $6,210

Tonkin said the total street value of the fentanyl, heroin and crack cocaine is about $1,222,410.

“This conviction is the result of outstanding police work and great collaboration between agencies,” said District Attorney Gregory Oakes in a news release. “A significant dealer was removed from the streets today, and we couldn’t have done it without partnership.”

Oakes praised to the Oswego City Police Department, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Homeland Security, which serve on the Drug Task Force along with investigators from the District Attorney’s Office.

Acosta’s trial started on May 29 in Judge Walter Hafner, Jr.’s courtroom. Chief Assistant District Attorney Mark Moody and Assistant District Attorney Leah Folgherait prosecuted the case. Attorney Jean Brown, of Oswego, represented Acosta.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 2.

Acosta, who has a prior felony conviction for second-degree robbery, faces a minimum sentence of eight years in state prison, with a potential maximum sentence of 20 years.
