Phoenix mom and grandma accused of smoking fentanyl in car with 3-year-old

PHOENIX — A Phoenix mother and grandmother were arrested, accused of smoking fentanyl inside a car with a 3-year-old girl between them. 

According to court documents, Phoenix police pulled over 57-year-old Jenny Choate near Van Buren and 40th streets after unmarked officers investigating a narcotics complaint noticed “activity consistent with using narcotics.”

Choate was driving a car with her daughter, Heather Egan, and her 3-year-old granddaughter unsecured in the front seat.

According to documents, police found drug paraphernalia in the vehicle, and Egan told officers she and her mother had been smoking fentanyl with the 3-year-old in between them. 

The documents also show trace amounts of fentanyl were found inside the little girl’s system. 

The girl was not tested until a day after her exposure, however, the documents say. 

Police said Choate and Egan are facing child abuse charges.
