SHREVEPORT, La. — Two Texas men were sentenced to 63 months in prison Tuesday for trafficking more than 10 kilograms of fentanyl through Louisiana, enough to kill “millions” of people, according to authorities.

Felipe Rodriguez, 22, of McAllen, and Brandon Montoya, 24, of Kaufman, were sentenced for possession with intent to distribute fentanyl. The men were also sentenced to five years of supervised release.

A Louisiana State Police trooper stopped Rodriguez and Montoya’s vehicle on May 10, 2018 traveling eastbound on I-20. During a search of the car, 10 one-kilogram packages containing pure fentanyl and a fentanyl derivative were found.

Rodriguez and Montoya told authorities they were approached in Mexico about work and were asked to drive to California to get the drugs and take them to Atlanta. Both men understood the meant transporting deadly narcotics and pleaded guilty on Sept. 13, 2018.
