18 Mar Braddock police officer charged with DUI while on duty, blood tests show she had fentanyl in her system
A Braddock Police officer has been charged with driving under the influence while on duty in January.According to police, Officer Renee Jones went to UPMC McKeesport early in the morning of Jan. 24 after Braddock police were called there for reports of a man suffering from a gunshot wound arrived at the hospital.Click the video player above to watch Pittsburgh’s Action News 4’s report from noon.Another officer at the hospital said Jones “walked into the hospital with a forward lean and dazed look on her face,” and also said she had dilated pupils and slurred speech. The officer noted Jones “appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance.”After speaking with the Police Department’s sergeant, police said Jones got into her police car and parked behind the shooting victim’s car. Her car was blocking parking spaces and ambulance access.When other officers went to ask Jones to move her car, they saw her passed out behind the wheel with the engine running. They attempted to wake her multiple times with no response. When Jones did awake, police say she appeared confused and repeatedly asked what was going on.She was then taken into the hospital where she was disarmed and submitted a blood test, which revealed she had fentanyl in her system, the criminal complaint said.According to the criminal complaint, detectives later reviewed 911 calls made on the morning of Jan. 24. A witness told police that he witnessed a Braddock police car driving erratically near the Duquesne McKeesport Bridge, striking a median.The witness also said the car drove over the center line and into the oncoming lane of traffic past the Eastland Shopping Center. Jones is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, reckless driving and careless driving.
