Convicted of drug trafficking over 21 years ago, New Bedford man arrested on new charges – News – southcoasttoday.com

NEW BEDFORD — A city man, convicted more than 21 years ago of drug trafficking, was arrested Tuesday on cocaine and fentanyl trafficking charges, court records say.

Bernabe Yulfo, 73, of 186 Rockway St., Apartment C, is charged with trafficking cocaine 36 grams or more, less than 100 grams; trafficking more than 10 grams of fentanyl; and possession with intent to distribute a Class B substance, subsequent offense, according to records in New Bedford District Court.

Yulfo was arraigned Wednesday in New Bedford District Court and not guilty pleas were entered in his behalf. Defense attorney Michele Rioux was appointed to represent him.

Bristol County prosecutors requested and Judge Paul G. Pino granted a petition to hold Yulfo without bail at the Bristol County House of Correction for a dangerousness hearing on April 24 in New Bedford District Court, records indicate. The judge also gave him a bail revocation warning.

Yulfo is suspected of running a cocaine distribution service from his Rockway Street home, which is not far from Hathaway Road, and he was the target of a search warrant, court records say. The warrant was obtained from New Bedford District Court.

Narcotics detectives with the New Bedford Police Department’s Organized Crime Intelligence Bureau found seven plastic bags of fentanyl, weighing 34.1 grams; 29 plastic bags of cocaine, weighing 65.1 grams; 12 plastic bags of crack cocaine, weighing 7.8 grams; a digital scale; cut corner bags; packaging materials; and $695 in cash. The cash was seized by detectives as a result of drug proceeds.

Detectives stopped his black 2003 Honda Civic about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Myrtle and Adams streets, New Bedford, handcuffed him and brought him back to the Rockway Street apartment to conduct the court-authorized search, records say. Yulfo gave police the keys to his apartment and was brought into the living room, where he was read his rights against self-incrimination.

Yulfo’s Board of Probation record shows a conviction for trafficking a Class B substance on Dec. 8, 1997, according to court records.
