Sheriff’s deputies in Lynwood helped save the lives of five men in two separate incidents who had overdosed on fentanyl, authorities said Monday.

The first overdoses occurred Friday night, when deputies went to a residence in the 2600 block of 108th Street on a medical rescue call, sheriff’s Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez said.

“Deputies located and recognized three males suffering from a possible fentanyl overdose, as they showed a faint pulse, extremely slow breathing, were foaming at the mouth and had bloody noses,” Navarro-Suarez said.

“In an effort to revive them and save their lives, the deputies administered their department-issued Narcan,” Navarro-Suarez said.

Narcan is a nasal spray that counteracts the life-threatening effects of an opioid overdose.

“After a first dosage appeared to have little to no effect on the lifeless men, the deputies administered a second dosage, which proved successful,” Navarro-Suarez said. “All three men began to gasp for air and immediately showed additional signs of improvement.”

The deputies then found a fourth man at the location suffering from the same symptoms, and administered Narcan on that individual as well.

County fire paramedics then took over the treatment, and the men were hospitalized in stable condition.

“The deputies are well trained and they don’t hesitate,” sheriff’s Capt. Kerry Carter said in a statement. “It goes to show they’re really there for the community and we are excited and proud of their efforts.”

Investigators believe the four men thought they were using cocaine, but instead were using fentanyl, Navarro-Suarez said. The investigation was continuing.

On Saturday, one of the deputies from Friday’s incident responded to a medical call, found another man suffering from the same symptoms, and administered Narcan, saving the man’s life, the sheriff’s department reported.
