A 20-year-old East Lampeter Township man charged with giving drugs to a woman who fatally overdosed had his case bound over to Lancaster County Court on Friday.

Ryan Hughes was charged in January with drug delivery resulting in death and criminal use of a cellphone. He waived a preliminary hearing scheduled for Friday, and District Judge Denise Commins ordered his case to go on to county court, the Lancaster County district attorney’s office said.

East Lampeter Township police said Hughes invited the woman, 23, to his home Aug. 3, and gave her what she though was Xanax, according to the district attorney’s office. Xanax is a prescription medication to treat anxiety.

Hughes gave her a powder of heroin, fentanyl and Xanax, according to police.

The woman died of a fentanyl-involved overdose, the district attorney’s office said.

Police found some of the powder in Hughes’ bedroom. Cell phone conversations showed he had invited the woman to his home to provide her Xanax, according to the district attorney’s office.

Hughes remains in Lancaster County Prison in lieu of $750,000 bail.
