Fall River man charged after police find ‘mound’ of suspected fentanyl in apartment – News – The Herald News, Fall River, MA

FALL RIVER — Police this month discovered a fist-sized “mound” of suspected fentanyl loose on a bedroom shelf while responding to a domestic disturbance in a Purchase Street apartment, according to court documents.

The discovery led to the arrest of 35-year-old city resident Jared Correiro four days later on a single count of trafficking a Class A substance over 36 grams, according to court documents.

Police were called to the tenement home where Correiro lived with his sister in the third-floor apartment at about 8:15 p.m. on April 4.

The home’s landlord told Fall River Police Officer Brandon Wixon she was trying to evict Correiro and his sister, who she suspected were dealing drugs, according to the officer’s report.

Officers Wixon and Jennifer DeLeon knocked on the door of the apartment. Correiro’s sister answered and said she was fighting with her brother.

She told officers she had to go and did not know where her brother was. Wixon responded he had to check her apartment to ensure no one was hurt, according to his report.

The woman agreed, then left, leaving the door to her apartment slightly open. The officers walked inside and saw the apartment “in disarray,” with broken glass, liquor bottles and trash all over the floor, according to the report.

The apartment was unoccupied. White powder was found caked on a spoon and a credit card alongside various drug paraphernalia on a bedside table, the report states.

A “mound” of white powder was dumped out onto a nearby shelf. Wixon said the size of the mound was comparable to the size of his hand.

The officer immediately believed the powder was “pure Fentanyl” based on its color and texture. He left the room and told a supervisor, who notified “appropriate members of the Drug Enforcement Agency,” according to his report.

“Due to the abundance of evidence found in plain view, it is obvious… the drugs present were significantly more than that of a drug addict for personal use,” wrote Wixon.

Officers executing the search warrant found an additional bag of suspected fentanyl in a bedroom dresser drawer, and a scale and baggies under a pillow, according to the report.

The narcotics had a combined weight of about 41 grams, according to Wixon. Investigators could not weigh the loose powder that for “officer safety purposes” was secured in “bulky packaging.”

A warrant was issued for Correiro’s arrest. He was taken into custody April 8, according to court documents.

Correiro defaulted “multiple times” on previous court dates scheduled for past charges, court documents show. In light of the new charge he saw his bail revoked on a drug case pending in New Bedford District Court.
