Four arrested in early morning drug raid

Four people are facing federal drug charges after a monthslong investigation came to a head in an early morning raid Thursday. According to federal court documents, Desirsee Wells-Cooper, Francis Macie, Linda Wainwright and Juan Sanchez Jr. were arrested for allegedly selling drugs out of an apartment on Oak Street. In the affidavit, investigators allege Macie had been renting the apartment for the purpose of distributing heroin and fentanyl. Wells-Cooper is accused of selling fentanyl. Wainwright allegedly sold heroin out of the apartment. Sanchez is facing charges for possessing with intent to distribute cocaine and cocaine base.Neighbors said drug use and violent activity was common in and around the apartment. “It’s been hell here,” said upstairs neighbor Gary Gagne. “You hear people getting beat, constant knocking at the door all hours of the night, constant drug traffic in and out.”Gagne said the arrests were “leaps and bounds beyond a relief for people in the neighborhood.” In December, authorities executed a search warrant at the apartment and found more than 200 grams of cocaine base and roughly 70 Oxycodone and morphine pills. Investigators also located a pistol and sawed-off shotgun inside the residence. According to court documents, investigators from the Southern Vermont Drug Task Force continued to investigate the sale of illegal drugs from the apartment throughout January and February. Court documents outline two times investigators sent paid informants to buy heroin at the apartment; once from Wainwright and once from Wells-Cooper. According to the affidavit, after executing the search warrant on Thursday, investigators found about 15 grams of cocaine and 5 grams of cocaine base, as well as cash in a room where it appeared Sanchez had been sleeping. Investigators also allegedly found cash, weighing and packaging materials and a pistol with a full magazine. Court documents claim investigators found needles in a bedroom believed to be used by Macie during Thursday’s search. Brattleboro police had previously been searching for an assault suspect Chyquan Cupe and believed he had been living in the same apartment at the start of the year. Cupe was recently indicted by a grand jury in Burlington on multiple counts of distributing controlled substances. The four suspects each made their initial appearance in federal court in Burlington on Thursday afternoon, but their hearings were continued to Friday.
