11 Apr Gun, fentanyl seized in biggest drug bust in Chatham history

Chatham-Kent police have made the largest drug bust in the municipality’s history, seizing more than $2.6 million worth of opioids and other illegal drugs.
On Wednesday night, Chatham-Kent police raided an apartment in Chatham, impounding cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, marijuana, hydromorphone, GHB, ecstasy, morphine and fentanyl.
An electronic digital scale, packaging materials, and $52,000 in Canadian currency, along with a 9mm handgun and ammunition, were also seized in the raid.
“Firstly, I wish to commend all of our officers who worked on this project. This was both a lengthy and tedious investigation requiring the use of many resources,” Chief Gary Conn said in a statement. “I have been saying for some time now that a lot of our property crime, especially break and enters, are tied back to drugs, as there is a direct correlation between these offences.”
Jonathan Toornstra, a 35-year-old Chatham man, faces 18 drug and weapon-related charges.
Conn said police remain committed to “mitigating and fighting against the sale and consumption of illicit drugs within our community.
“Habitually, it is just a few drug traffickers who are the main source of bringing drugs into our community. Thankfully today, one of those few has been arrested and, more importantly, all of these drugs, including a handgun have been removed from our streets.”
Highly addictive and 100 times more potent than morphine, fentanyl has been implicated in much of the opioid drug crisis sweeping Ontario, including a recent spike in fatal overdoses across the region sweeping from London to Brantford. The people whose deaths are suspected to be linked to a fentanyl overdose included a 17-year-old Woodstock boy.
