NORTH KITSAP — Kitsap County sheriff’s deputies investigated the possibility of the presence of a suspicious substance at the scene of a man’s death Wednesday, but test results were negative for the powerful opioid fentanyl.

The 27-year-old man was found dead at a residence in the North Kitsap community of Lofall — no foul play is suspected — and during the investigation, a deputy coroner found a bag of powdered substance, said Deputy Scott Wilson.

“We have to approach this as a worst case scenario,” Wilson said, explaining that the large response was due to concerns for the safety of officers and other investigators.

The man’s parents left the residence for the night as a precaution and investigators called the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab team and a state National Guard hazardous material team from Camp Murray.

Wilson said the two teams conducted field tests, which came up negative for fentanyl. The substance will require further testing.

Last August in Poulsbo, a 23-year-old woman was found dead of a suspected fentanyl overdose. Three others in the house exhibited signs of overdosing on opioids. A suspected cocaine dealer who lived at the house was arrested but then released. Kitsap County Prosecutor Chad Enright said prosecutors are still investigating the matter for possible charges.
