Man faces multiple charges after OPP seize $21K of fentanyl in Exeter

Huron County OPP say they have put a “significant dent” in the local drug supply after a traffic stop netted nearly $21,000 worth of fentanyl.

A 38-year-old South Huron man faces a raft of charges, including two counts of possession for the purposes of trafficking.

Just after 7:30 p.m. on June 2, an OPP officer stopped a car on Huron Street West in Exeter.

The officer noted discrepancies when he checked the name and birth date the driver had given him. He placed the driver under arrest for obstructing a police officer.

A subsequent search of the vehicle turned up a “large quantity” of suspected purple fentanyl with an estimated street value of nearly $21,000. Officers also seized more than $20,000 in cash.

Police, upon confirming the man’s real identity, determined his driver’s licence was suspended and he is wanted by the Waterloo Regional Police Service.

The following Wednesday, OPP officers carried out a search warrant at a home on Mill Street in South Huron.

They seized another opioid, buprenorphine, trace amounts of fentanyl, a push-dagger style knife, a digital scale and drug packaging materials.

The man faces two counts of possession for the purposes of trafficking, as well as charges of possession of a Schedule 1 substance (fentanyl), obstructing a peace officer, impersonation with intent to avoid arrest, possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime, driving while under suspension, unauthorized possession of a weapon and four counts of failing to comply with a recognizance.

He remains in custody and has a court date for June 14 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Goderich.
