NEW BEDFORD — A city man charged with running a drug delivery service was found dangerous and released on conditions, court records say.

Derek B. Furtado, 30, of 665 County St., Apartment 2 South, must post $10,000 cash bail, wear a GPS monitoring device, remain employed, commit no new offenses and not possess any firearms or dangerous weapons, while he is awaiting trial, according to documents in New Bedford District Court.

Judge David P. Sorrenti made the findings that Furtado was dangerous and set conditions for his release after a pre-trial detention hearing Thursday in New Bedford District Court. The hearing was held via a video conference, while Furtado was being held without bail at the Bristol County House of Correction, Dartmouth. He returns to court on May 21 for a probable cause hearing.

Furtado is charged with trafficking fentanyl more than 80 grams, according to court documents.

He was arrested as a result of a drug raid at his apartment on May 1, according to court documents.

Police said he was operating a fentanyl distribution service from his apartment and he was the target of a search warrant that was executed about 5:30 p.m. May 1 by detectives from the New Bedford Police Department’s narcotics unit, Organized Crime Intelligence Bureau, court records indicate.

Police spotted him as he exiting a side entrance at his County Street home, stopped him and brought him back to the apartment, where he was handcuffed and read his rights, court records say.

Detectives searched the apartment and seized five plastic bags of fentanyl, weighing 79.5 grams; 16 wax folds weighing 3.1 grams of fentanyl; sandwich bags; cut corner bags; and a digital scale.
