New Bedford Man Had Fentanyl Next To His Sleeping Children: MSP

NEW BEDFORD, MA — A New Bedford man was arrested Tuesday after State Police raided his apartment and said they found a bag of fentanyl next to his sleeping children, along with another 77 grams of fentanyl in the other room. Oscar Ramos-Torres, 30, was charged with trafficking fentanyl over 80 grams, possession of a Class B substance with intent to distribute, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Police said they got a search warrant following an investigation into Ramos-Torres trafficking fentanyl. When police knocked and said they had a warrant, no one answered the door, but the raid team said they heard scurrying inside the apartment.

Police forced the door open and said they found Ramos-Torres standing in a bedroom, with his girlfriend and two young children lying on a mattress on the floor. A bag containing about 8.7 grams of fentanyl was discovered within two feet of the sleeping children, State Police said. Police said they called the state’s child protection agency because of the children’s proximity to the drugs.

In a second bedroom, police said there was a workbench where Ramos-Torres prepared bagged fentanyl he was selling. Police said they seized a plastic container holding 77 grams of fentanyl, 26 Suboxone strips, a digital scale, plastic bags, 10 rounds of ammunition, and $6,245 in cash.

Ramos-Torres will be arraigned in New Bedford District Court, where he’s already serving a probation sentence out of.
