12 Jun Ossipee man sentenced to prison for causing fatal crash after using fentanyl
Relatives of a woman who was killed in a crash in 2016 said Wednesday they were disappointed in the sentence handed down for the man who was convicted of causing the crash after using fentanyl.Jason Nason, 30, of Ossippe, was sentenced Wednesday to 7½ to 22 years in prison after he was convicted in May of manslaughter, negligent homicide, aggravated DUI and drug possession.Prosecutors said Nason was high on fentanyl in September 2016 when his pickup truck crossed the center line on Route 16 and struck a car driven by Janet Baumann, 61. She died at the scene of the crash.Her husband, Gary Baumann, 67, was critically injured. With help, he stood to speak to the court during the sentencing hearing.”Basically, I was maimed,” he said. “Then, I had to sustain nine months of rehabilitation, learning to walk again while grieving for my wife.”Janet and Gary Baumann had moved to Ossipee two months before and were returning from a hike when the crash happened.”Janet was a beautiful flower in the garden of life,” her husband said. “She was a baby nurse, a pediatric RN. The one thing Jason broke is my heart. It cannot be repaired.”Gary Baumann asked for the maximum possible sentence.”We could simplify this whole thing if only Jason Nason could get the same sentence he gave my wife,” he said.Nason apologized in court.”I am really sorry for what happened,” he said. “Like my mother said, it was terrible and tragic. I wish I could change what happened, but I can’t and I’m sorry.”Nason had prior drug and driving convictions, and prosecutors asked for a longer sentence. Nason could get out of prison in 6½ years if he successfully completes a drug program.
