What court heard was a family-run drug trafficking operation has netted the patriarch of the group a prison term.

Sean C.J. Carson pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a drug for the purpose of trafficking and one count of possession of crime proceeds during a Monday appearance at Regina Provincial Court.

Federal Crown agent Hal Wellsch said the charges spring from an April 5 bust in which police located a significant quantity of methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Court heard police received information Carson and his family were involved in trafficking those two drugs, and that he had his two adult sons helping him store and sell the drugs.

Police conducted surveillance at Carson’s residence on the 1900 block of Athol Street, and noted a number of people making short-duration stops suggestive of drug sales.

Police information was that Carson didn’t keep his meth at that address, and court heard investigators followed one of his sons to another residence, this one on the 2000 block of 14th Avenue.

Court heard police spotted one of the sons and Carson’s common-law spouse leaving the 14th Avenue location together.

Searches of the two addresses resulted in the seizure of approximately 172 grams of meth and a little more than 17 grams of fentanyl. The amounts are considered significant since a single dose of either drug is one-tenth of a gram or less.

Police also seized $1,000 in cash and items often used in drug trafficking such as scales, packaging and cellphones.

Defence lawyer Jennifer Calderbank said Carson became addicted to drugs approximately 25 years ago. While his drug of choice is meth, his partner became addicted to opioids after suffering a broken back and now uses fentanyl.

Calderbank said Carson, now 43, has reached the point in life — having lost everything, including his house — where he wants to leave drugs behind.

Carson’s common-law and sons are still before the court with their charges.

Judge Pat Reis agreed to impose the 33-month sentence, less remand credit, jointly proposed by Crown and defence counsel.
