PROVIDENCE — A Providence man was sentenced in federal court to 2½ years in prison for trafficking fentanyl, the U.S. Attorney in Connecticut announced in a press release Friday.

Alcides Alba-Gomez, 29, will serve three years of supervised release after his prison sentence, John H. Durham, the U.S. Attorney for Connecticut announced. Alba-Gomez was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge Victor A. Bolden in Bridgeport.

According to court documents and statements made in court, on Sept. 13, 2017, Alba-Gomez and his associate, Gabri Javier Delapaz, traveled from Rhode Island to New York to pick up narcotics from a supplier, the press release said.

As they were returning to Rhode Island, the Connecticut State Police stopped their car on Route 95 in Old Lyme. A search of the car revealed a package containing about one kilogram of fentanyl hidden beneath a rear seat cushion.

On Jan. 24, 2019, Alba-Gomez pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl. He has been detained since his arrest. Alba-Gomez  has not prior criminal history, the press release said.

Delapaz, 27, of Providence, pleaded guilty to the same offense on Jan. 16, and is detained while awaiting sentencing.

This case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Connecticut State Police Statewide Narcotics Task Force East, and New London Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney S. Dave Vatti.
