Red Scorpion gangster gets more than 7 years jail on drug, gun charges

A Red Scorpion gangster has been sentenced to seven and a half years in jail after pleading guilty to trafficking and possession of an illegal firearm.

A number of other charges that Khaadim Kwame Coddett was facing were stayed Friday at both the provincial and B.C. Supreme Court levels.

Sabrina Nemis, of the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, said Tuesday that the federal Crown and Coddett’s defence lawyer reached a deal that saw him plead guilty in February to one count of possession for the purpose of trafficking drugs including heroin, fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and carfentanil.

Coddett also admitted that he possessed a loaded restricted firearm — a 9 mm Smith and Wesson Sigma handgun — without having a licence in Richmond in September 2017.

Richmond Provincial Court Judge Nancy Adams agreed with the recommended sentence and also imposed a lifetime weapons prohibition on Coddett, as well as ordering that a sample of his DNA be taken.

Coddett, 27, was originally charged with 19 counts a year ago after a Delta Police investigation targeted a dial-a-dope line based in Richmond that was supplying its products to South Delta and Vancouver.

The police probe was dubbed Project Green Planet after the name the traffickers gave to their drug line. Investigators linked the line to Red Scorpion gang members and associates. Several others were also charged and are awaiting trial.

At the time, Delta Police said officers executed search warrants in the fall of 2017 at various locations in Richmond and Burnaby and seized $50,000 to $100,000 worth of street-level drugs, as well as firearms, bulletproof vests, an axe and a machete.

They also found Red Scorpion-emblazoned jewelry.

Delta Police public affairs manager Cris Leykauf said Tuesday that her agency is “pleased with the sentence and the judge’s decision.”

Meanwhile, Coddett is facing a new charge of assault, laid last week while he was in custody awaiting sentencing. He is due to appear in Surrey Provincial Court Wednesday on that charge.
