WORCESTER – A grand jury has indicted a Providence man who was arrested in December on drug-trafficking and child endangerment charges after being stopped for speeding.
A Worcester County grand jury handed up a five-count indictment Wednesday in Worcester Superior Court charging 51-year-old Nelson Gonzalez with trafficking in heroin, trafficking in fentanyl, driving so as to endanger, reckless endangerment of a child and driving without a license.
State police said a 2013 Nissan Altima driven by Mr. Gonzalez was traveling 95 mph in a 65 mph zone on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Auburn on the night of Dec. 26 when Trooper Mark Parr pulled the car over for speeding. Mr. Gonzalez did not have a valid driver’s license and had a child in the vehicle with him, according to state police.
Authorities said an inventory search before the Altima was towed uncovered about 544 grams of what was believed to be a mixture of heroin and fentanyl and about 35 grams of what investigators suspected was a mixture of fentanyl and lactose.
Mr. Gonzalez was initially charged in Central District Court. Wednesday’s indictment will move his case to Worcester Superior Court, where he will be arraigned on a date to be determined.
