AUBURN, Mass. – A Rhode Island man is facing heroin and fentanyl trafficking and child endangerment charges after State Police stopped him for speeding on the Massachusetts Turnpike.

Nelson Gonzalez, 51, of Providence, R.I., was released on $50,000 bail pending his arraignment in Worcester District Court. State Police said Gonzalez had a child passenger in his vehicle during the traffic stop and did not have a valid driver’s license.

Trooper Mark Parr stopped a 2013 Nissan Altima, driven by Gonzalez, on I-90 Eastbound in Auburn around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday for traveling approximately 95 mph in a 65 mph zone, according to State Police.

Before Gonzalez’s car was towed, Parr found approximately 544 grams of a substance believed to be a mixture of heroin and fentanyl inside the vehicle and approximately 35 grams of a substance believed to be a mixture of fentanyl and lactose.

Gonzalez was charged with trafficking fentanyl, trafficking heroin, possessing with intent to distribute a Class A substance, conspiracy to violate drug laws, unlicensed driving, negligent driving, speeding, and child endangerment.
