26 Mar South Carolina women accused of possessing fentanyl in Berkeley County | West Virginia
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Two South Carolina women were charged this month by a federal grand jury with drug counts stemming from a January traffic stop in Martinsburg that resulted in the recovery of about 12 ounces of a controlled substance, U.S. Attorney Bill Powell said.
Peggy Louise Farrington, 54, and Jacqueline Lee Weigland, 57, both of Galivants Ferry, S.C., each were charged March 5 with one count of aiding and abetting possession with intent to distribute fentanyl, according to a news release from Powell’s office.
Farrington and Weigland each face five to 40 years in prison and a fine of up to $5 million.
Martinsburg police stopped the vehicle in which the women were traveling after observing it to be operating without headlights near the 1600 block of West King Street after leaving a nearby ROCS convenience store.
Police said that Farrington admitted to traveling from South Carolina to Philadelphia to pick up drugs for someone and intended to return to South Carolina to deliver them, court records said.
Farrington told police that she was paid $1,000 to transport and deliver the drugs, which were suspected to be heroin, records said.
Weigand initially said she didn’t know about the drugs, then admitted that Farrington was being paid to transport them and she was to be paid for traveling with Farrington, records said.
Fentanyl is an opioid prescription medicine meant to be used to treat people with extreme pain, but has been mixed with heroin in illegal drug distribution.
