South Placer Jail inmates hospitalized after exposure to unknown substance

Multiple inmates from the South Placer Jail in Roseville were taken to area hospitals Monday after exposure to an unknown substance, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said. The Sheriff’s Office said that although the substance is currently unknown, officials believe it may be fentanyl. Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that is extremely dangerous due to the small amount needed for the user to overdose. The Roseville Fire Department said it was responding to the South Placer Jail at around 3:00 p.m. for complaints of an inmate “showing altered levels on consciousness.”When fire officials arrived at the jail, they found several inmates and deputies with unknown medical issues. They later found that one of the inmates had taken an unknown substance into the jail booking area. Four inmates, eight deputies and a K-9 officer were put through a decontamination process and transported to local hospitals, fire officials said. Three other inmates were treated on the scene. Fire officials said the facility has been isolated so there is no threat to anyone else. No other information has been released. Stay with KCRA for the latest.
