Suspect in Friday crash believed to be under influence of heroin – News – Monroe News – Monroe, Michigan

The incident began at 3:45 p.m. on Friday, when deputies responded to the scene of the crash at the intersection of Jackman and Smith Rds.

BEDFORD TOWNSHIP — The 34-year-old female suspect in a pedestrian-vehicle crash that occurred in Bedford on Friday was in possession of heroin that she said could have been laced with fentanyl, according to a report from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began at 3:45 p.m. on Friday, when deputies responded to the scene of the crash at the intersection of Jackman and Smith Rds.

They reportedly located the victim — a 47-year-old Ohio man — laying facedown in the ditch on the side of the road, and upon making contact with him he complained of pain in his back and hips. The victim was transported to Toledo ProMedica for treatment.

The suspect allegedly fled the scene in her vehicle before authorities arrived, but the witness who originally called 911 to report the accident was able to give deputies a description of the suspect vehicle.

The witness told the deputies that the suspect vehicle had been driving erratically before swerving off the road and striking the Ohio man.

Deputies who were canvassing for the suspect vehicle were eventually flagged down by the suspect, who was in a parking lot near the intersection of Smith Road and Lewis Avenue.

The suspect and another female were reportedly standing in the parking lot near their vehicles, and when deputies made contact the suspect told them that she had rear-ended the female victim’s vehicle at the Smith Rd. stoplight.

According to the report, the suspect displayed signs of being under the influence of a substance. She reportedly told the deputies that the only drug she had ingested that day was the correct dose of her prescription medication, but she failed the deputies’ sobriety tests.

The officers recovered what they believed to be heroin while conducting a search of the suspect’s purse and vehicle, at which point the suspect advised that she had previously purchased heroin laced with fentanyl.

Deputies also recovered a piece of fabric from the broken headlight of the suspect vehicle that allegedly matched the clothing worn by the pedestrian.

The suspect was arrested without further incident.
