WARNING ISSUED FENTANYL OVERDOSES: NC police issue warning after toxic batch of fentanyl results in multiple overdoses

BURLINGTON, N.C. – Law enforcement is issuing a warning after a toxic batch of drugs was spread around a North Carolina community leading to several overdose calls.

Police in Burlington, North Carolina said they responded to five overdoses in a matter of hours overnight Friday.

They said it stems from a batch of fentanyl that was mixed with heroin or cocaine, then distributed throughout the community. 

Police said four of the five overdose cases happened near the same road. 

Neighbors said they were shocked to hear what was happening. 

“This has always been a quiet street and we’ve always been glad to live here,” neighbor Susan Lawlder said. “I hate it. I hate it, just the fact that it can be so overwhelming sometimes.”

Police said the situation is so bad they want people to turn in their drugs, no questions asked. 

“It sounds a little weird when you ask people to turn in their illicit drugs, but it’s all about protecting the community,” Burlington Assistant Police Chief Brian Long said. 

Authorities said two of the overdose victims may have been staying at the same hotel. 

The hotel is working with investigators.
