The deputy smelled alcohol and saw several empty beer bottles on the passenger side floor when Greene opened the car door, the charging document said. The deputy also saw Greene grab and try to hide a plastic bag that was between his legs.

Greene said the car belonged to a roommate and he had not been drinking, the document said. Greene said he was driving home after seeing his girlfriend.

The deputy conducted a field sobriety test and, while not believing Greene was intoxicated, thought he was impaired and needed to call a sober driver to pick him up.

The deputy also called for a K9 team while he was finishing the paperwork for the cellphone citation.

The deputy asked Greene about the plastic bag, now in his pocket, and Greene handed it over, the document said. The bag contained several capsules filled with suspected cocaine.

A search of Greene turned up $1,044 and a plastic bag with several vials that appeared to be heroin, but which a field test showed were fentanyl, the document said.

The cocaine weighed 26.3 grams while the fentanyl weighed 19.6 grams. An ounce is 28 grams.

The amount of fentanyl was enough to constitute a large amount of the synthetic opioid under Maryland law.

Greene was charged with possession of a large amount of fentanyl, possession with intent to distribute cocaine and fentanyl, and other related offenses.

At a bond hearing on Wednesday, Assistant Public Defender Brian Hutchison told Washington County District Judge Terry A. Myers that Greene is employed by a counseling service. The service’s website says it provides addiction treatment and counseling services.

Deputy State’s Attorney Joseph Michael asked Myers to hold Greene without bond or set bail at $100,000. Greene has a criminal record going back more than 25 years that includes aggravated assault, robbery, stalking, burglary and fleeing and eluding police.

Myers set Greene’s bond at $20,000.
