Weymouth man indicted after police say his safe full of opioids was stolen – News – The Patriot Ledger, Quincy, MA

DEDHAM — A Norfolk County Grand Jury had indicted a Weymouth man after police said a safe full of drugs and cash was stolen from his apartment.

Christopher A. Fontes, 27, was indicted on trafficking more than 10 grams of fentanyl, trafficking more than 36 grams of heroin and fentanyl, possession of a firearm during a felony, possessing a gun and ammunition without a firearm identification card and improper storage of a gun.

The indictment transfers the case from Quincy District Court to Norfolk Superior Court where more serious crimes are tried and defendants can face longer sentences if convicted. Fontes is due to be arraigned in superior court June 10.

Weymouth police said they were called about a break-in to Fontes’ apartment on March 10 by his roommate. The two men accused of the burglary led police on a “dangerous” car chase through a half dozen South Shore towns that night and threw debit and credit cards linked to Fontes out of the window of the car in Rockland.

The pair was finally stopped when they hit a tire-shredding device deployed by a State Police trooper on Route 3, according to police reports filed with court. In the back of the car was a safe, that police said was taken from Fontes’ room, filled with nearly $10,000 in cash and almost 48 grams of opioids believed to be heroin and the more potent fentanyl.

While investigating the break-in police found a loaded handgun on Fontes’ nightstand.

Police returned to the apartment the next day with a search warrant and found almost $20,000 in cash in bundles and a ledger that police believe Fontes used to keep track of drug sales.

A warrant was issued for Fontes’ arrest and police say he turned himself into the Weymouth Police Station on March 21. Fontes was given a $5,000 bail in Quincy District Court, but is currently being held at the Plymouth County jail on a separate case. A special prosecutor is handling Fontes’ case so the Norfolk County District Attorney’s office can avoid prosecuting a victim in one of its other cases.

The two men accused of the break-in, Roodler Jean-Baptiste, 25, of Randolph and Nelito Mapp-Monteiro, 25, of Brockton were indicted earlier this month on burglary charges and are scheduled to be arraigned in superior court July 12.
