A 20-year-old Wilmington woman was arrested Monday after police seized multiple drugs from her car, including more than 50 bags of fentanyl, a deadly synthetic opioid, according to Elsmere Police.

The woman, Arianna Mojica, hid the drugs in modified iced tea cans designed to conceal items but appear normal in size and weight, police said.

Police pulled Mojica over for speeding while driving her four-year-old step-daughter on Bungalow Avenue at Cypress Avenue in Elsmere. During the stop police determined Mojica did not have a valid driver’s license, was wanted for two outstanding capiases and was on probation.

During a search of her car, police said they found the two iced tea cans, which contained the following.

  • 54 bags of fentanyl
  • 23.9 grams of marijuana in numerous packages
  • .5 grams of crack/cocaine in one bag

The child was removed and released to a guardian, police said. The Division of Family Services was contacted and will conduct a follow-up, according to police.

Fentanyl is considered 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Last year it was present in 72 percent of Delaware’s overdose death victims, according to state Division of Forensic Science data.

Mojica was charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, two counts of tampering with physical evidence, endangering the welfare of a child, unlawfully dealing with a child/allowing child to remain in a place drugs are stored, driving at an unreasonable speed, driving a vehicle with a tinted license plate cover and driving without a valid license.

Solutions: An opioid fee would fund addiction treatment, but no one agrees how to spend the money

Mojica was ordered to have no contact with the town of Elsmere and was released on $11,702 unsecured bond.
