Winchester Circuit Court hands up indictments | Winchester Star

WINCHESTER — A Stephens City man accused of assaulting and stabbing a woman and a Winchester man suspected of prostituting women were among the people indicted Dec. 18 by a Winchester Circuit Court grand jury.

On Aug. 21, a woman told police that Anthony Lee Curry approached her car in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven at 704 N. Loudoun St., according to a criminal complaint written by police Officer Bryan T. Derryberry. The woman said Curry punched her through the driver’s side window and attempted to stab her with a pocket knife.

Derryberry wrote that the woman had a deep cut in her finger that she said occurred when she put up her hands to protect herself. The woman told Derryberry that Curry said, “I got you now (expletive),” after stabbing her and then ran off. Curry, 65, of the 200 block of Raven Road in Stephens City, is accused of malicious wounding.

In the prostitution/sex trafficking case, James Gardner Dennis of the 500 block of Cather Avenue is accused of attempting to receive money from prostitution and attempting to obtain proceeds from prostitution between May 1 and June 22. The charges are over allegations by two women, according to the transcript of a Sept. 21 bond hearing for Dennis. Heather Hovermale, a Winchester assistant commonwealth’s attorney, said at the hearing that the women accused Dennis of prostituting them and one said he pointed a pistol at him. Hovermale said a BB gun that resembled a real pistol was found by police when they searched Dennis’ home.

Hovermale said she had evidence Dennis paid $600 in checks to a potential witness against him and she had a jail phone recording in which he tells one of the accusers not to call police. Gardner denied trying to influence potential witnesses. Gardner, a 45-year-old convicted sex offender with at least 22 felony convictions, was denied bail on the grounds that he was a flight risk. He remained in custody at the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center Wednesday night.
