HARSHAW – Kids at the Northwoods Community Elementary School tried their hand at engineering Thursday. It was part of the fourth and final STEAM-based project the students spent time on. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Teaching Principal Alex Bontz said one of the best lessons the students can learn is responding to failure. “We want to celebrate it where it’s learning, where it’s a growth mindset is the new thing in education, where you keep trying,” said Bontz. |

LAC DU FLAMBEAU – About 40 Native American middle school students from Lac Du Flambeau Public School left for Madison Thursday. The students will be going to the 15th annual UW Indigenous Health and Wellness Days. The event will allow students to learn about different health care jobs and let them tour the UW-Madison campus.
Lac Du Flambeau Public School teacher Brook Kmiecik said this will help Native American college students stay in school.
“When the students see the professionals, it becomes more of a reality for them,” said Kmiecik. “These programs where they’re actually going into colleges and they’re getting tours, it’s going to make them more comfortable.” |

5 years ago today emergency managers changed the source of the city’s drinking water to the Flint River. That water wasn’t properly treated and lead-contaminated water began flowing into homes and poisoning people who drank it. Five years later, city, state, and federal leaders are still working to fix it.

Wisconsin Public Radio reports that the board wants the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to review the study to determine the effectiveness of existing regulations and the viability of using safer technologies in refineries. About a third of the nation’s 150 refineries still use hydrofluoric acid to produce high octane gas.
