Fentanyl deadliest drug in U.S.

(CNN) — Fentanyl is now the most commonly used drug involved in overdoses. According to a new government report put out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fentanyl overdoses skyrocketed 113% between 2013 and 2016.

Use of the synthetic opioid has soared over the last several years, rivaling other drugs like cocaine and heroin. From 2012 to 2015, heroin was the most commonly found drug in overdose deaths.

In 2011, fentanyl was only involved in just 4% of drug fatalities. Fast forward five years, it was found in nearly 29% of overdose deaths.

The opioid crisis shined a light on doctors over-prescribing prescription painkillers in the U.S., which many say evolved into a heroin crisis and now a fentanyl epidemic.

The new study by the CDC also found that while those two drugs, and ones like it, are found in most accidental-overdose deaths. Prescription drugs are more likely to be used in suicidal overdoses.
