Can you really overdose from inhaling fentanyl?

Medical experts say you have to ingest fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, to overdose. You cannot overdose just by touching fentanyl, and it’s possible, but highly unlikely to overdose from fentanyl by simply inhaling it.

Fentanyl was ruled out as the agent in Monday’s substance-exposure incident at Roseville’s South Placer Jail.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the booking area of the jail remained closed after the release of an unknown substance hospitalized four inmates, eight jail staffers and a K-9, according to a news release issued by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office believed an inmate brought the substance into the booking area Monday afternoon but was still investigating, according to the release.

Those affected by the substance were hospitalized and then released, according to the release.

Toxicology tests were still being run to identify the substance, but Roseville’s Fire Hazmat Team said it was not the strong synthetic opioid Fentanyl.

Roseville fire crews responding to the scene originally suspected the substance may have been Fentanyl and described an inmate showing an “altered level of consciousness,” according to previous reporting by The Bee.
