A Georgia man was arrested Friday after a raid on a Hagerstown apartment on turned up fentanyl, heroin, crack cocaine, methamphetamine and other drugs, police said.
Rommel Johnson Jr., 23, of Lithonia, Ga., was charged with possession of a large amount of fentanyl and heroin, possession with intent to distribute those drugs and 13 other counts following the 6:30 a.m. search of an apartment in the 400 block of East Washington Street.
The search yielded more than 2 1/2 ounces of heroin, two ounces of fentanyl, almost 15 grams of crack cocaine, 4.8 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 28 Suboxone strips, seven Diazepam tablets, a small amount of marijuana, a powder used to cut drugs and a digital scale, according to the charging document.
The heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine were divided into small packets for sale, the document said.
Washington County District Court Judge Mark D. Thomas denied bond on Monday, noting the quantities of drugs involved and Johnson’s lack of ties to Hagerstown.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the county SWAT Team, the Frederick High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Area group, Maryland State Police and U.S. Department of Homeland Security took part in the search, the charging document said.
Johnson was found sleeping on an air mattress in the living room, while another man was in a bedroom, the document said. The other man was named in the charging document, but online court records did not show him being charged with a crime.
The apartment was a “trap house,” used solely for storing and selling drugs, the document said. However, the charging document did not state what the probable cause was for getting a search warrant. Johnson gave the name of a third man as the renter of the apartment, though he did not know where the man was, according to the document.
Johnson said he was visiting family in Hagerstown for about two weeks and the other man in the apartment was a “homeboy of his homeboy,” though he did not know him well. Johnson told police one relative he came to visit was recently arrested on a drug charge.
Police found two bags of a white powder in plain view in the kitchen and Johnson told them the other man “deals with that fetty,” using the street name for fentanyl. The other man was assisted by a woman from Delaware, Johnson told police.
Johnson showed the police where other narcotics were in the apartment, the document said.
Police believed Johnson and other other man were conspiring to sell the narcotics found in the apartment. Police also believed that Johnson and the other man would not have known about the drugs unless “they are responsible for guarding or selling the narcotics,” the document said.
The document did not indicate whether the other man will be charged.
