Traffic stop turns into a drug investigation in Levy County

Levy Co., Fla. (WCJB)– A simple traffic stop quickly turned into an investigation for Levy County deputies after a deputy saw a vehicle failed to make a complete stop at a stop sign.

According to deputies, on the night of January 18th, Rebecca Carter, 24, failed to stop at a stop sign. A deputy then tried to stop Carter, but she only tried to elude him. Carter then turned into a driveway and stopped.

That’s when a tall black man exited the passenger side of the car and ran from the scene. according to deputies, this person, left Carter to deal with the consequences.

Deputies saw two guns in the floorboard, a clear glass canister with a green leafy substance inside (with a marijuana sticker) and a black box which ad a plastic baggie hanging out of the closed lid that had a white powdery substance. With all of these things, deputies were able to begin a follow-up investigation.

Carter denied of a passenger and claimed she owned all the items inside the car. Deputies located and seized more than they initially found when they searched the car. The substance in the glass jar was marijuana.

The two guns seen on the floorboard were collected and determined to be a 9 MM and a BB gun made to look like a firearm. The black box had used syringes, an unidentified substance suspected to be Fentanyl and the white powder in the baggie protruding from the lid was identified as heroin.

Upon further search, deputies found six more guns, two shotguns (one was sawed off), three rifles and one BB rifle. An assortment of ammunition and high capacity magazines (clips) was found in the same area of the vehicle in which the guns were located.

Carter was arrested and taken to the Levy County Detention. She has been charged with trafficking in fentanyl, possession of heroin with the intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a short-barreled shotgun. Carter remains in jail on a $250,000.00 bond.

The investigation is currently on-going. Deputies expect the man that ran away will be identified in the future and charges could be filed at a later date.
