Two Monroe County men are facing years in prison after supplying heroin that lead to an overdose death of a mother who died in front of her young son.

Marvin D. Russeau Jr., 31, and Paul E. Sanders, 37, both of Newport, pleaded to manslaughter charges in connection with the May 10, 2017, death of Tina Lynn Sharp, 45, of LaSalle. Russeau is Sharp’s nephew.

As part of a sentence agreement, Russeau is expected to receive up to eight years in prison while Sanders will receive a minimum of 11 years.

“It’s up to a maximum of eight on the low end of the sentencing guidelines,” said Russeau’s attorney, John C. Gonta of Newport.

Sanders, who pleaded no contest, received a stiffer sentence because is a habitual offender who was convicted of felony drug delivery or manufacturing charges in 2012 and 2014, said Monroe County Prosecutor Michael G. Roehrig.

Gina Essary, the victim’s sister, said she supported the sentence agreement.

“I hope both spend most of their time reflecting on the wrong they have done and how their actions and behavior affected the family of the deceased,” Essary said. “I hope they can be rehabilitated and when they are released they won’t go back to their wrong-doings and addictions. Today I do not forgive them. And I really don’t know if I ever can. Especially my nephew.”

Sharp died in her home and was discovered by her 8-year-old son, who was preparing for school.

Years prior, she suffered severe injuries in a motorcycle accident. She became addicted to her medication and that led her to heroin.

Essary described her sister as a good person who loved her children and fought hard to break the addiction. The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Sharp died of an overdose of fentanyl and heroin.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation that led to Russeau being charged with delivery of heroin causing death.

Assistant Prosecutor Loren Beadry said Russeau obtained the heroin from Sanders. Russeau later agreed to testify against Sanders.

Russeau, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter, will be sentenced May 2 by 38th Circuit Judge Daniel S. White.

Sanders, who entered his plea before White on Friday, will be sentenced May 30. He is being represented by Trenton attorney Alec J. Chabalowski.
